Our charity is called Sang-ngak-chö-dzong1 and is a UK-based Buddhist organisation with sibling charities in the USA and mainland Europe. Through our spiritual directors Ngak’chang Rinpoche and Khandro Déchen, our organisation first offered teachings in 1977, and we obtained charitable status in 1993.
We believe we are in a position to benefit people through establishing a permanent retreat centre. In the last five years our charity’s successes in the UK and abroad include:
-
In the East
-
Contributing to the ongoing provision of education, food, and healthcare for 65 Tibetan refugee children living in remote Northern India.
See www.pemakoproject.org
-
Provision of housing and medical care for Tibetan Lamas living in exile in Nepal.
-
In the West
-
Provision of residential courses on Buddhist psychology and practice for over 800 Buddhist and non-Buddhists in the UK, with similar numbers in the USA and Continental Europe.
-
Invitation of respected Buddhist teachers from the USA, Europe, and Asia to the UK to give public and private teachings.
-
Across borders
-
A sustained healthy financial performance, enabling us to invest in new works each year, expanding the range of benefits we can offer in both the West and East.
-
Creation and preservation of Buddhist ritual artefacts, through ethical employment of the Nepalese and Tibetan artisans in Nepal and India, as well as restoration of Buddhist artefacts—for use—which otherwise would have remained in museums or private collections.
-
Generation of the largest global living archive of research materials relating to a unique lineage of Buddhist practice on our encyclopaedic website www.aroencyclopaedia.org
-
Publishing works by multiple writers, including our own Spiritual Directors Ngak’chang Rinpoche (biographer of the Dalai Lama) & his wife Khandro Déchen, both through our own publishing house Aro Books, the global publisher Shambhala Publications and via magazines and online sources.
